2nd-grader sent home for crucifix drawing

An 8-year old sent home and ordered to undergo psychological evaluation for drawing a crucifix?  Are you kidding me?  This is the point where people must look objectively at the mixed messages that we are sending our youth.  Basically, that is not allowing a child to express creative output.  This is in and of itself a violation of our freedom of speech.  It is bad enough that they have taken away the word ‘Christmas’ from our public school vernacular.  At my son’s school, it is now the Winter Break.  Thanksgiving is now The Feast.  And Halloween, forget it, they cannot even celebrate that anymore at school. (by the way, that is called Fall Festival)

But, the school system here has imprinted on this child that he has done something wrong…something so bad that they request psychological evaluation.  Has liberal political correctness gone so far that it is now morally base to draw a religious picture at school?  The teacher instruction was to draw something that reminded them of the holiday (not Christmas mind you).  So, by not allowing the child to artistically express himself the school system has infringed his right to freedom of speech.  Worse though is that by ordering psychological counseling before returning to school, the school has traumatized the child and stigmatized him in that system.  If I were that child’s parent and the school refused to readmit him without the punishment of psychological evaluation, I would begin homeschooling or send to a private school.

This is not the same thing as praying in the school.  This was a free expression of a child’s idea of Christmas.  Had a child drawn a Menorah or Kwanzaa picture, would the outrage by the teacher have been as strong?  This is the self-loathing idea that the school system is teaching our children.  I for one am against that!

I want my family to celebrate Christmas and be proud of that!  I will let my son dress up every Halloween and gets tons of candy…and I will do that without any fear that he will believe in witches on brooms or him becoming some satanic worshiper.  And forever, we will always celebrate Thanksgiving as was intended.  I will not now, nor ever apologize for that.  I will not let my child feel as if he is doing something wrong for celebrating such either.  In fact, it will be like when we were children and we will always have those great fond memories.  Things like, waiting up until midnight to try and catch a glimpse of Santa.  Or at Thanksgiving, with all our family, and the children trying to see how many olives they can fit on their fingers.  And, dressing up as some ghoulish monster to try and scare more candy out of our neighbors.  Then staying up late at night trying to eat as much candy as we could.  Yes, my mother told my sister and I that we would get stomach aches, and she was right, but that did not slow us down on eating that delicious candy.

Are these memories that we want to deny our children?  Do we want to make things so sterile that there is little to celebrate?  Or worse, if you do celebrate like your parents did, then you would be a pariah at school?

That cannot happen…and that will not happen under my watch (either as a parent or a Congressman).  We should embrace these things that are uniquely American and not relegate these to bad memories.  So, stand with me to protect these values.  Do not let the PC world claim these treasures that we hold so near and dear.  Let’s enjoy our heritage, let’s keep our customs and holidays unique…and not let the PC world claim another victory.

Was this a public or a private school? I can't find the answer in the article and it seems to me it would be an important fact to consider.

STOP the "politicdal correctness syndrom" This article is really scary. A note for Jim, your web site is great and I like this opportunity to voice my thoughts or concerns. Keep up the good work Jim.

Don Neve ... (3rd Distgrict) :>)

I'm voting for you, Jim.  What happened to our country that our children need to consider the political persuasions of their teachers before they can draw a picture, or raise their hand in class?

Also, "Anonymous": paragraph 2 indicates that the school is in fact a "public" (government) school.

Orwell predicted this in his book "1984".  And what of the parents then, who demand that their "unreconstructed" child be allowed to continue, unmolested?  Will the child be encouraged to report them to a government reconditioning center?

Although I would have pulled the lever for Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck in order to get rid of the big-spending RINO, Bush-McCain ticket, I am never again compromising my principles, or the principles this country was founded on.  I am doing something I never thought possible: I am voting Libertarian this election (at least for Jim, anyway...).  I will never again vote for someone who does not respect my First Amendment right to speak the plain truth!

If that means we disagree on a few issues, then so be it.  I want a representative who will damned well listen to common sense!  My vote has to count for at least that much. The public teacher who sent that kid home and ordered psychological testing reminds me of "Nurse Ratched" from "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest"!!!!  She should be immediately suspended, then fired without pay or pension, pending a proper investigation.

How often does this happen?  How can we get more active in making sure it no longer happens?  What is the name of the school where this happened?

If we let America slide into socialism, we will never get her back.  Let's let Mr. Prindle's candidacy be a wakeup call to the establishment.  I'm going to do everything I can to get him elected. I'm telling all my friends and neighbors to vote for him.  I suggest everyone here do the same.  If we band together, we don't have to choose between tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum.  There are 9 months until the election. Let's make the most of them!

I feel like everything is a double standard and has to be poltically correct. I'm really getting sick of it! Since when did it become okay for the school systems to raise our children? I don't recall giving the okay to teach my children what is right and wrong concerning celebrating Christmas and other important holidays in our family? Common sense has truely left many people. My question is how do you help them to regain it? I hope by educating the public on these important issues. Thanks, Jim, for standing up for the important issues!
